French piano sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque perform at the Philharmonie.
Russian born conductor Semyon Bychkov leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam in a concert featuring Katia and Marielle Labèque. The piano playing sisters will perform Max Bruch’s Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, which Bychkov conducted in a recording they made with the Philharmonia Orchestra back in 1990.
Also on the programme is Dmitri Shostakovich’s fifth symphony, which the composer completed in the summer of 1937. A work “steeped in an atmosphere of mourning”, its premier apparently had members of the audience weeping during the ‘Largo’ movement.
