The Isango Ensemble break new ground with an international co-production with Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, The Royal Opera, Repons Foundation and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Using talent from the townships surrounding Cape Town, the Isango Ensemble has created a series of award-winning shows. Its latest production, “A Man of Good Hope”, is an adaptation of a book by Jonny Steinberg based on the true story of young Somali refugee Asad Abdullahi, “with a painful past, miraculous good luck and a brilliant head for business.”
After years in a refugee camp and hustling on the streets of Ethiopia, Asad sets off for South Africa. “But when he arrives, he discovers the violent reality of life in the townships – and his adventures really begin.”
Music is a unique part of a story that is told through exuberant songs and dance--clan songs that stir memories. The Guardian called the show “a powerful testament to the resilience of humanity.”
