Iraqi comedian Ahmed Albasheer is the English-language performer at this year’s Humour pour la Paix festival.
The annual Humour pour la Paix festival showcases stand-up comic talent from around the world, and always includes one English-language act in its line-up.
Ahmed Albasheer from Iraq has forged a successful reputation out of tragedy. He was spared in a suicide attack in February 2011 in the heart of his hometown of Ramadi, 100 km from Baghdad, but seven of his colleagues, neighbours and friends died in the blast. Albasheer vowed to engage in a battle against obscurantism, using the sharp edge of humour, biting parody and media power.
Now relocated to Jordan capital, Albasheer has created a very popular show and continues to to fight for a liberal Iraq where different faiths can co-exist.
