The minister stated the government's goal was to ensure that 10% of the 1,700-strong fleet of state-owned vehicles are electric or hybrid.

He said that progress had been made this year with the purchase of between 15 and 20 such vehicles across all administrations.

Today, Delano reported that Luxembourg police would purchase four more electric vehicles in 2018 in addition to the two Tesla Model S which will enter into operation in October this year.

The latter cost in the region of €100,000 each. The purchases are part of a pilot project to test how electric vehicles can be used by different services within the police.

When asked about the wisdom of this huge investment, the minister said the Tesla S Model, a top-of-the-range category, was chosen because you cannot “catch a criminal on the motorway with a 2CV”.

He further said that not all electric vehicles purchased would be in the same category, but that it would depend on their use. Among the four electric vehicles to enter into operation next year, he said two will be small cars.

Minister Bausch said he was convinced Luxembourg’s automotive market would undergo a radical revolution in electric mobility over the coming two to three years.
