There has been a whopping 243% increase of night flights in 2016 compared to 2002, RTL reported on Monday 8 January.

These night flights, especially the big Cargolux planes, constitute a nuisance for both residents and businesses, such as hotels and restaurants. Planes fly over some areas around Findel every 15 minutes during the day.

ANA, the Aerial Navigation Administration, has however only recorded a 17% increase of overall flights—of which the majority are night flights.

Especially Cargolux, which has some of the biggest airplanes, take off and land at night. This year, the company plans to ask for 65 night flights only.

Residents around the airport have been complaining for years, and representatives of ANA, LuxAirport, Cargolux, Luxair and the ministry meet now every three months.

However, transport minister François Bausch has said that no one had yet asked him to ban night flights completely.

A total ban would be an economic catastrophe for the country, Bausch warned.
