Almost 50% of pupils will attend a technical secondary school
At the end of this school year, 5,136 primary school pupils have been assessed and allocated either in a lycée classique (academically oriented high school) or a lycée technique (technically oriented high school).
Of these students, 36.7% have been oriented towards secondary education (enseignement secondaire: lycée classique: 7e ES), 47.9% towards technical secondary education (7e ST), 15% were assigned to the preparatory regime of the technical secondary education (7e MO). Only 0.4% will do an extended course in 2017-2018 before being oriented towards a secondary education.
The “orientation procedure” has been in effect since 2013 and applied for the last time this year.
The decision is taken by an orientation council, and is based on the results of the pupil, the parents’ opinion, the results in tests, the work of the pupil and on the opinion of a psychologist, if that was requested.
The new procedure, which will enter into force next year, will involve the main teacher and the parents together in deciding where the child should continue their education. More info here.
