Spokesman for the German chain in Luxembourg Benoit Denis told Delano on Wednesday that later this year, shoppers will be able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables loose at Aldi’s 16 shops.

As part of its strategy to reduce single use plastic waste, the store will sell reusable vegetable bags at a symbolic price of 1 centime.

The bags are expected to be rolled out at its other stores over the summer. Since 1 January 2019, shops are no longer required to give away plastic bags thicker than 15 micrometres.

Increasingly, supermarket chains are making a stand on single-use plastics. In 2018, Belgian chain Delhaize banned the sale of hygiene products containing microplastic beads, and won an award for using cardboard halopacks for its fast food meals and natural branding of some organic vegetables. Luxembourg chain Cactus, meanwhile, introduced reusable veggie bags in August 2017.

Aldi has 16 shops in Luxembourg and expects to open its seventeenth in Belval on 2 October.
