In February 2018, 121 people applied for international protection in Luxembour 

On Tuesday, Luxembourg’s government released the February statistics on asylum applications.

In February 2018, 121 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg while in February 2017, 236 asylum seekers were registered has having arrived in Luxembourg.

This number keeps decreasing since January where 175 were registered. However, the Luxembourg reception and integration agency (Olai) specified that this figure does not include the totality of arrivers in Luxembourg, because not all asylum seekers applied as soon as they arrived. It does, however, include all those who came to Luxembourg as part of the relocation programme with Greece and Italy.

Origins

The majority of asylum seekers came from Georgia (33), Syria (31) and Serbia (30). However, Algeria (21), was pushed back to seventh place in the ranking compared with fourth in January, to be replaced by Morocco (25).

Refugee status

In February 2018, 98 people received the official status of refugee, representing 46.9% of total applications, number that has increased since January 2018 (30.4%). 7 applications received the status of subsidiary protection.

Out of 209 applications in February this year, 40.2% were rejected due to transfer decision/incompetence (66), rejection (12) and implicit withdrawal (6).
