Mudam has been seeking a new director since Enrico Lunghi resigned in controversial circumstances at the end of 2016.

Currently the director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, a post she has held since 2013, Suzanne Cotter was previously curator for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi project. She has also worked for Modern Art Oxford in the UK. In 2005 she was awarded the medal of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. Cotter has also curated exhibitions by artists such as Lucio Fontana and Paul Klee.

She was selected from 44 candidates for the post, including three from Luxembourg. Speculation that Cotter would be the new director was already circulating in September--she had actually signed a contract in August. Cotter will retain one foot in Portugal during a transition phase while the Serralves Museum seeks a successor.
