In 2016 Luxembourg installed 20 fixed speed cameras on roads Infrastructure Ministry

Responding to a parliamentary question, infrastructure minister François Bausch confirmed that a working group was currently analysing their use in other countries.

Unlike fixed speed cameras, which measure speeds in one location, average speed cameras are located between two points.

Bausch said that no locations had yet been decided nor had a date for their installation been agreed upon.

Responding to another parliamentary question earlier in the week, Bausch revealed that the 20 fixed speed cameras installed in Luxembourg in 2016 had cost the state €13 million.

Acquisition and deployment accounted for the biggest share at €11.5 million, salaries of the 30 staff who work with the cameras cost €1.5 million and electricity costs were €250,000.

Revenues brought in from the fines charged to speeding motorists in 2016 amounted to €12.5 million.

In January, Delano reported that three more fixed speed cameras are expected to be installed in Luxembourg during 2017, bringing the total tally to 23.

The three cameras will be located as follows:

  • The N8 between Saeul and Brouch;
  • CR118 between Angelsberg and Mersch; and
  • The end of the A4 motorway as it joins the Raemerich roundabout.
