The Bauhaus was a short-lived German school of art and design founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, which later moved to Dessau and then Berlin, before being shut down by the Nazis in 1933. Despite only being around for 14 years, the movement has passed on a long-lasting legacy whose influence can still be felt today in and around the capital.

To mark the 100 years since the birth of the Bauhaus movement, Germany will be celebrating with a whole host of events, from lectures to workshops, with Berlin acting as the hub. The Bauhaus Archive will be presenting its centenary exhibition Original Bauhaus at the Ber-linische Galerie, which recounts the history behind famous, familiar and forgotten Bauhaus originals. Meanwhile, BerlinBauhausWeek is a week-long festival (from 31/08 to 08/09) featuring films, exhibitions, performances and guided tours presenting the history and influence of this movement.

Why not explore the roots of Bauhaus via the Grand Tour of Modernism, which offers tour tips and lists Modernist icons, individual buildings and residential estates spanning the century throughout Berlin and many other cities. Simply rent a bike and zip across the city taking in the sights – for starters, Berlin is home to six Unesco-listed modernist estates! For a fully immersive experience, stay at the Ellington Hotel in Charlottenburg, a Bauhaus remnant that was a dancehall with jazz roots frequented by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in a former life. Meanwhile 10km north-east of the city, you’ll also find the Unesco-listed ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau.

If you’ve caught the Bauhaus bug and want to extend your trip, why not visit Weimar, the birthplace of the Modernist movement, and check out the brand new Bauhaus Museum (Klassik Stiftung Weimar). The Bauhaus school’s two other homes are also getting new museums, with Dessau’s launching in September and Berlin’s in 2020.
