Earlier this month Theresa May, the UK prime minister, called a snap general election. May said a new mandate would strengthen Britain’s position in Brexit negotiations with the rest of the EU.

According to information provided by the British embassy in Luxembourg, UK citizens have until 22 May to register for the 8 June elections.

Registration can be done online via the UK government’s website.

A notice on the site, accessed on 28 April, read: “You don’t need to register again if you’ve already registered. It’s too late to register for the 4 May local elections.”

UK nationals who have lived abroad for 15 years are no longer eligible to vote in British elections. According to the latest census figures available, that disenfranchises roughly 1 in 3 Brits in Luxembourg.
