Petition 762, which went live on the Chamber of Deputies website on Tuesday, calls to increase the minimum paid leave threshold from 25 days to at least 30 in order to “improve the quality of life for everyone and redress the difference between the public and private sectors.”

The author said that civil servants’ annual leave ranges from 32 days to 34 days for people aged over 50, and 36 days for those over 55.

The petition aims to redress the balance of paid holidays for people working in both spheres “seeing that workers in the private sector pay their taxes like those in the public sector do,” the author wrote.

The measure is one of five to go live this week. The others are:

  • Petition 743, which calls for an easing of the naturalisation process for long-term residents to become Luxembourgers;
  • Petition 760, which calls for an “ambitious and concrete national action plan” for the construction of housing;
  • Petition 753, which urges for financial sanctions to be introduced against companies that do not respect the employability quotas of people with disabilities;
  • Petition 745, which pushes for the opening of a media centre specialising in sexual abuse and violence against minors in Luxembourg.

Since the creation of the public petition tool in Luxembourg in March 2014, 400 public petitions have been posted on the Chamber of Deputies website. Petitions receiving 4,500 or more signatures will be debated in a public parliamentary committee hearing.

Anyone can sign a petition provided they are aged 15 or above and have a Luxembourg social security number.
