The increase in population is not as pronounced as in previous years. Mayor Lydie Polfer announced that there were 116,328 people living in Luxembourg city on 31 December 2017.

At the monthly city breakfast press briefing on Wednesday 17 January, she provided more information on the composition of the capital’s population. There are more men than women (59,545 compared to 56,783) and 167 nationalities.

Less than a third of residents are Luxembourg nationals (33,924). Of the 82,404 foreign residents, the French are the biggest minority (20,102), followed by 12,435 Portuguese, 8,024 Italians, 4,597 Belgians and 3,968 Germans. For the first time, the Chinese entered the top 10 with 1,164 people living in the capital.
