The current mayor Lydie Polfer, centre, presented the DP local election manifesto for the capital on Monday 18 September. DP

The DP has been at the head of local government since 1970. Current DP mayor Lydie Polfer has said that they, together with the current coalition partner, the Greens, had done good work.

Their priorities are children, mobility and housing.

Here are some of the policies that the DP has published in its election manifesto:

  • “Luxembourg-City has 115.000 residents, and there are 187,000 jobs in the city. We aim to bring residences and workplaces closer together. In the coming years some 8,500 apartments will be built in the urban area;

  • We promote targeted social and affordable accommodation to allow young families to live in the city. Furthermore, we are building accommodation for students, the elderly and the disabled;

  • The city consists of 50% green spaces. These are constantly maintained and modernised. Green spaces and playgrounds are foreseen in all new residential areas at the planning stage. The largest park in the city will be created in the Ban de Gasperich.

  • We aim to build modern school infrastructures in all city districts. The public school has a lot to offer: all children benefit from services tailored to their needs. The individual support offered to children is a priority;

  • We want to organise help with homework and remedial tuition in all neighbourhoods, and are open to alternative school models, such as the all-day school;

  • We are continuing to expand after-school childcare. In our “Foyers Scolaires”, children are offered a healthy meal, served from a buffet. They can pursue artistic and cultural activities in creative studios and are lovingly cared for. Due to high demand, additional foyers are being built;

  • We want to open crèche facilities in all major city districts. New crèche facilities are planned in Belair, Bonnevoie, Cents, Gare, Gasperich, Limpertsberg, Neudorf and in the city centre.

  • We promote public transport and soft mobility, but we aim to keep the city accessible to cars;
  • The tram will be operating soon, public squares and spaces along the tram route are being modernised;
  • An App for pedestrians is being developed, and secure bike lanes as well as bridges and lifts for cyclists and pedestrians will improve conditions for soft mobility;
  • The bus system is being further optimised and adapted to the needs of the population;
  • The traffic flow will be rendered more fluid, additional parking spaces are being created, and several car parks are being renovated.
  • We advocate modern sports facilities in all parts of the city; Sports promote values such as fair-play and team spirit. We build multi-sports facilities for youngsters and organise sports weeks and courses, as well as sports activities for children, young people, adults and the elderly.
  • We organise social activities for the elderly, and promote intergenerational dialogue;

  • We will continue to improve barrier-free access to buildings and activities for persons with disabilities;

  • We promote the peaceful coexistence of all nationalities through Luxembourgish courses as well as cultural and sporting activities, which bring people together.

  • We support large and small theatres, as well as cultural associations;
  • We maintain our museums to the highest standards and adapt them to the most modern museological criteria;
  • We support cultural programmes for children and young people.”
