Istanbul rerun returns İmamoğlu

Opposition coalition candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu has won the rerun of the Istanbul mayoral election in what The Guardian called an unprecedented test for both Turkey’s fragile democratic institutions and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s political future. He won 54% of the vote. According to the BBC, Erdoğan had previously said that “whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey”. Reuters cites İmamoğlu as saying that the result has “renewed our faith in democracy and refreshed our trust in justice.”

Trump not looking for war

The Trump administration says it is ready to talk with Iran as tension grows in the Middle East. Speaking on NBC’s Meet The Press programme on Sunday, president Trump said: “I’m not looking for war”, but that if it comes there will be “obliteration like you’ve never seen before.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is cited by CNBC saying that the administration is prepared to negotiate with Iran “with no preconditions”.

Prague demonstration

Organisers say about 250,000 people attended a rally in Prague demanding the resignation of prime minister Andrej Babis, the BBC reports. According to The Guardian, the demonstrators disapprove of conflicts between the billionaire tycoon’s political and business interests. CNN says there is also concern that Babis, dubbed the “Czech Trump”, had collaborated with the Communist-era secret police.

Leading Conservative party leader candidate Boris Johnson is facing calls to explain why police were called to the flat he shares with his partner Carrie Symonds on Friday, says The Times. He refused to answer questions at a hustings on Saturday, says Deutsche Welle.

The Bank for International Settlements has said that Facebook’s proposed cryptocurrency poses risks to the international banking system, The Guardian reports. Libra is set for launch in 2020 and other tech firms, including Amazon and Alibaba could also move into financial services.

Police in Oregon are looking for 11 Republican senators who walked out of the state’s Capitol building to avoid a vote landmark “cap and trade” climate change legislation in the state going ahead, the BBC reports.
