James Randolph (“Randy”) Evans, an Atlanta lawyer, was named as the Republican president’s choice in September, and Evans appeared before a senate committee on 1 November.

On Tuesday, the US Senate foreign relations committee approved the nomination by a vote of 11-10, reported Politically Georgia, a blog run by that state’s largest newspaper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The 11 votes in favour were the committee’s Republican Party members; the 10 against were Democrats, Politically Georgia stated on 5 December.

Evans will now need to be confirmed by a vote before the full senate, and his nomination has already been recorded on the body’s “executive calendar” of pending votes.

According to Politically Georgia:

“The earliest Evans’ nomination could be considered is tomorrow [Wednesday], but it could take weeks or even months for floor action to be scheduled.”

As of this writing, the vote was not scheduled.

If Evans is confirmed, he will need to present his credentials to Grand Duke Henri before officially taking on the role.
