The French broadcaster reported on Tuesday that the 26-year-old suspect was one of two detainees caught attempting to escape La Talaudière prison in the Loire region.

The unnamed man was first arrested near Villefranche-sur-Saone in March on suspicion of involvement in the Goeres jewellers robbery, which took place at around 11:30am on 20 March.

In the incident, two armed men wearing rubber masks of elderly people stormed the luxury watch store on rue Philippe II. They fired shots and fled in a black Renault with French plates, which was later found abandoned in Hollerich.

According to reports from French media, the suspects had stolen a car in Lyon before committing the Luxembourg heist, stealing valuables worth close to €1m.

After the robbery, the suspects were among those involved in a shoot-out with police at a toll booth near Lyon at around 3am on 21 March. The incident led to the arrest of up to five people, reports suggest.
