Govinda Van Maele’s feature film debut, which stars German actor Frederick Lau and Luxembourg's rising star Vicky Krieps, will be entered in the foreign language film category, the government announced on Thursday.

Produced by Les Films Fauves and shot in various villages around the Oesling and Gutland, earlier this year Delano editor Duncan Roberts described “Gutland” as “a thoroughly captivating and entertaining thriller that will make a lasting impression on Luxembourg audiences-- both natives and non-Luxembourgers--in particular.”

“Gutland” received its world premiere in September 2017 when it received critical acclaim in the “discovery” section of the Toronto International Film Festival. It received its Luxembourg premiere at the Luxembourg City Film Festival in February 2018 where it won the audience award.

It was also selected for more than 30 film festivals around the world. It will be shown in Belgian cinemas from 12 September and in France from 9 November.

The nominations for the best foreign film at the 2019 Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2019.
