Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s DP prime minister, is seen with Donald Trump, the US president, and Étienne Schneider, Luxembourg’s LSAP deputy PM and defence minister (on right), at a Nato summit in Brussels, 11 July 2018.
In recent weeks, Trump has criticised his military allies for not spending the 2% of GDP on defence called for in Nato guidelines.
Heading into the conference, Bettel tweeted the Luxmebourg planned “to increase its defence expenditure and move towards the 2% guideline within a decade”.
During the summit, Trump called on Nato members to double their defence spending, from 2% to 4% of GDP.
