In 2016 the sector employed approximately 1,600 individuals and generated €175m (just shy of 0.4% of GDP). Over three quarters of those employees were based in organisations with under 10 employees.

The health technology sector will "contribute to a smart and sustainable economy" and is "considered one of the priority areas for development to diversify the national economy," said Françoise Liners, in charge of health technology at the ministry.

Sasha Baillie, CEO of Luxinnovation, cited the "increasing impact of chronic diseases, the aging of the population and the growing importance of prevention and outpatient treatment" as causes for the rapidly changing field. However, she added, "the emergence of digital solutions is contributing to these changes, but is also undoubtedly a provider of solutions for the sector."
