Wild boar run away from beaters during a hunt. A petition to end the practice is set to be debated in parliament.Photo: Geza Farkas/Shutterstock

Mike Clemens’s petition, number 1156, was submitted on 23 November and has been open to electronic signatures since 20 December.

The author says that hunting with beaters totally contradicts animal welfare and is outdated. He says that not only does the noise made by the beaters cause animals undue stress, but that moving targets mean hunters often don’t get to make a clean kill, leading to unnecessary suffering for animals. Clemens also cites that case of wild boar being driven onto the A7 motorway by beaters during a hunt in November as an argument for the ban, saying that road safety is an issue that needs to be considered.

By 8 January the petition had garnered some 6,499 signatures, well over the 4,500 required for it to be debated by the relevant parliamentary committee. The petition is still open for signatures until 31 January. Anyone over the age of 15 with a Luxembourg social security card can sign a petition by simply going to the Chamber of Deputies website.
