Boson Energy is developing next generation of small-scale solutions to convert local waste into clean energy for local use. Earlier Luxembourg winners include Apateq and Epuramat. “Looking at the number of Red Herring 100 winners in that space per capita it shows that Luxembourg is doing some good work in the space,” Heike Carl Zatterstrom, CCO at Boson Energy told Delano.

“Looking beyond Boson, I read this as a growing awareness that we need to deal with the physical reality of waste in a better way,” Zatterstrom wrote on a LinkedIn post in reaction to the honour. “And that sustainable small-scale waste treatment technology can hold its own and make people genuinely excited also in the largely digital space of smart cities and IoT.”

In an interview in the winter 2018 edition of Delano, Zatterstrom said the company had been awarded a 2.8mn R&D grant relating to its demonstration project in Göttingen, adding: “The fact that we received a German environmental permit to run our biomass gasification technology in the centre of what is one of the ‘greenest’ cities in Germany is a pretty strong indication that we have what it takes to build ‘In My Back Yard’ plants.”
