The segment was broadcast after an article was published on 18 January in America’s largest financial newspaper on Brits taking Luxembourg nationality in advance of Brexit.

On Tuesday, Larry Potash, a presenter on “WGN Morning News”, told viewers:

“The UK left the European Union, which means British people living in Luxembourg have to learn the local language and pass a test. And if you know anything about Luxembourg’s language, and you probably don’t, it’s really, really weird. It’s called Luxembourgish. It’s a mix of French and German. And the Wall Street Journal reports if you’re taking the language test, you need to know things like, the name of a pancake is Gromperekichelcher.”

(Potato pancake would be a more accurate translation.)

Later in the segment, Potash stated:

“When I contacted Liz Wenger at LearnLuxembourgish.com for help with this story, she asked if I could mention her website. And of course, I said ‘yes’. And she said, ‘Larry, dat ass fantastesch’. And I said, ‘why, yes, Liz, you are so right. That is fantastic.’ Which is what that means.”

According to a press release issued by the station in November, “WGN Morning News” is the top rated breakfast news programme among adults in Chicago.
