A new action plan to reduce waste in households has been presented by the environment minister, Carole Dieschbourg. The scheme, introduced on 6 November, called for the amount of waste that is burned to be reduced to a minimum.
There is a public consultation on the proposal until January 2018, where residents can suggest their own ideas, before the final plan will be approved.
The five-year plan sets a range of goals. Food waste should be reduced by 50% through education and prevention.
For household waste, the target is to recycle at least 55%; a maximum of 10% of household waste should be sent to dumps. All local councils should be linked to recycling centres.
The plan calls to reduce all bulky refuse by 20 % through repairs and re-use.
Other areas concerned are organic waste, construction waste and green waste, which also have specific measures.
