Sunday’s events have inflamed an already tense situation with US Defense Secretary James Mattis telling reporters that any threat to the United States, its allies or its territories “will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming.”

South Korea responded to the test by holding live-fire exercises intended to simulate a strike on North Korea’s nuclear test site at Punggye-ri.

Unsurprisingly, the United States and Russia/USSR are far out ahead in terms of nuclear tests, conducting 1,032 and 715 respectively.
