  • American bank Northern Trust has chosen Luxembourg to continue developing its EU operations because of uncertainties related to Brexit. Northern Trust already employs 140 people in Luxembourg and bought the Luxembourg activities of Swiss bank UBS in asset management.
  • Green energy stagnates at 55% of total energy production in Luxembourg in 2016. 45% of renewable energy is produced by hydroelectricity.
  • Mercedes announced a big campaign to update engine software on the diesel models Euro5 and Euro6. Mercedes stated it is not a recall, but “a service, which means it’s not obligatory”. The announcement comes a week after German media announced an inquiry into fraudulent engine software.
  • Foreign residents who have lived in Luxembourg city for more than five years and who have registered to vote represent 19% of the electorate. 1,549 French, 1,422 Portuguese, 718 Italians et 505 Germans have registered to vote in the upcoming 8 October local elections. Luxembourg city’s population is composed of 70% of foreign residents.
  • François Bausch, minister for transport and infrastructure, has said that the DP-LSAP-déi Gréng coalition has worked well together, but that the parliamentary elections in October 2018 are still far away and that the government should concentrate on finishing the outstanding matters of the coalition agreement.
