It made it not only a record year for people obtaining Luxembourg nationality but it was almost triple the figure for 2016 (10,095) and continues a growing trend.
Braz said that the game changer was the provision of 11 different options under the new law that entered into force on 1 April, 2017. These options allowed applicants a more simplified procedure, as opposed to the classic naturalisation route.
Among the 11 options were marriage to a Luxembourger, service as a volunteer soldier in the army, immigration as a minor, receipt of a welcome and integration contract (CAI) and 20+ years’ residency.
He further said that 1,014 people who were born in Luxembourg to foreign parents automatically obtained Luxembourg nationality at the time they reached majority age, a possibility only available since April.
Regarding recovered of Luxembourg nationality for descendants of grandparents who were Luxembourgers on 1 January 1900, this provision will be available until the end of 2018.
