Launched in September by Philippe Paul, petition 1107 aims to communicate residents’ wish to “see the excessive use of plastic packaging for the general public reduced.”

Philippe suggests supermarket chains put customer comfort over social and environmental responsibility in their use of plastic packaging for fruit, vegetations and single-use gloves.

It comes after an earlier petition calling for the same goal, and published on change.org, garnered 14,000 signatures.

“It is indeed a question of contributing to the betterment of society by asking Parliament to legislate on the misuse of plastic packaging, because we are convinced that only imposed rules will make it possible to respect the environment more in our daily lives,” the petitioner wrote.

Concerns about plastic waste are growing in Luxembourg and the EU. In October, EU approved legislation banning 10 single-use plastic items, including plastic cutlery, by 2021. Meanwhile, a second  petition (1117) calls for a ban on disposable cutlery not made from biodegradable material.

Petitions that garner 4,500 or more signatures will be debated in parliament. Petition 1107 closes on 21 November 2018.

Anyone may sign a petition in Luxembourg provided they are aged 15 or over and have a social security card for Luxembourg.
