As well as being picked by the jury as the joint winner of the coffee-table book category (alongside Philippe Stachowski’s “Le pays des 3 frontières”), “I Am Not A Refugee” won the public prize, which was selected by visitors to rtl.lu from all of the shortlisted books in the three main categories.

The book was born from the iamnotarefugee.lu digital platform, which was launched by Frédérique Buck in 2016 to raise awareness and to “counter the rather stereotyped and even biased representation of refugees in the mass media.” It aimed to create a more human narrative by allowing refugees to tell their own stories.

The project was supported by Delano, which published several of the refugee interviews, and our sister publication Paperjam.

“I Am Not A Refugee” is available in English at bookstores, or can be ordered from Maison Moderne here. Profits from the sale of the book are being used for the conception and creation of projects for social inclusion.
