Altogether, it is looking to fill 1,290 new posts, as outlined in the draft budget presented on Thursday by public services minister Dan Kersch.

According to a press release, of that number, 723 posts will be created in various state administrations, for example the tax office needs to fill 120 posts.

The education sector will have 567 new posts, of which 121 will be in secondary, 105 in primary, 40 specialised teachers, 42 positions related to differentiated education, 35 posts for the national reserve and 224 positions for education staff in psycho-social centres.

Kersch stressed the challenge in finding the right profiles, which he said was one reason why some positions should be open to non-Luxembourg nationals. Among them would be open to non-Luxembourgers are the 300 jobs to be created at the new Sanem prison.

In 2016, the State created 750 new posts and filled just 650 of them. According to the government, by the end of 2016 there were 24,809 people employed by the State. Figures for 2017 were not available.

The public service ministry budget is expected to rise by 6% for 2018 in order to cover the costs associated with the new roles as well as covering training.
