The photo, posted on Twitter by Nasa, shows the Wolf Moon. A supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full the same day it reaches its perigee, its closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit.

The month’s second supermoon will occur on 31 January when there will be a total lunar eclipse or blood moon.
