Health minister Lydia Mutsch has launched the idea of a tax on sugary drinksPicture credit: Coralie Ferreira

The measure is supposed to lower sugar consumption, especially in children and young adults. A similar tax already exists in 12 countries across the EU.

The finance ministry has indicated it supports such a tax.

Economically, the tax would not pose much disruption as Luxembourg produces only a small amount of sugary drinks.

Nevertheless, the industry is being consulted, and first talks have been held.

Mutsch has however said that the planning, talks and comparative studies will take some time and such a tax will not be introduced in this legislative period. It will fall to the next government in 2018.
