With the winter months becoming a dreary drag, now’s the time to get planning a summer escape. With flights direct from Luxembourg, your own slice of paradise is only a little over two hours away.
Croatia’s Adriatic coastline is littered with a whole host of craggy islands, each with their own personality it can be so difficult to chose one. With flights direct to beautiful Bol on the south coast, Croatia’s third largest island comes packed with sun-drenched beaches, walking trails, hermitic monasteries, water sports a gogo and villages that preserve a laid back way of living. Need we convince you any more?
Sitting 2km west of Bol, the white pebbled Zlatni Rat beach is the poster boy of beaches for the whole of Croatia. Nicknamed the Golden Horn, the V-shaped spit extends over 600m into the crystal clear, azure blue waters. It is the perfect destination to try your hand at numerous water sports like sea kayaking, scuba diving and wakeboarding, and the westerly winds provide ample power for a spot of kite surfing too. Set to a backdrop of pine groves, the island’s largest peak also overlooks the spit, and at 778m high, the Vidova Gora makes Brac the highest of all the Adriatic islands. There’s a two-hour 8km walking trail from the beach to the summit, offering spectacular views of the spit below and the neighboring island of Hvar.
Bol is a good base for other walking trails, like the one to Zmajeva Spilja, or the Dragon’s Cave. This genteel 4km walk takes in the abandoned stone houses at Stipancici, before arriving at the 15th-centruy monastic settlement that features stone carvings of dragons and religious imagery. While you’re there, visit the cliff-top village of Murvica sitting 300m high up, and the Dračeva luka cove below. Meanwhile, another popular place to visit from Bol is the Unesco-world heritage site Blaca hermitage, or Pustinja Blaca. This monumental complex carved into the cliffs was once home to Glagolitic monks, and today exhibits numerous paintings, manuscripts and even a telescope.
The island has plenty of other gems hidden up its sleeve. But for now, that’s enough to whet your appetite and start you counting down the days until holiday time!
