UN passes weakened rape resolution

Amid severe criticism from some countries and observers, and despite the abstention of China and Russia, the UN Security Council on Tuesday passed a resolution to end rape in conflict. At the insistence of the United States, the resolution omitted references to sexual and reproductive health, The Guardian reports. CNN has detailed analysis of how the text of the resolution was changed during various drafts. Nevertheless, as the BBC reports, it had the support of renowned human rights lawyer Amal Clooney as well as Nobel Peace Prize winners Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad—both of whom were in Luxembourg last month for Grand Duchess Maria Teresa’s international forum on the subject.

IS says it launched Sri Lanka bombings

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks on Christian churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, The Guardian reports. A video and photos released by the terror organisation’s news agency show the suicide bombers with IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, says Sri Lanka’s Colombo Page. Warnings issued by India's intelligence service to Sri Lanka had been based on information obtained from an IS suspect, CNN claims.

Trump meets Twitter CEO

US president Donald Trump met with Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, on Tuesday Reuters reports. The news agency claims the president, renowned for his tweets, “spent a significant time” questioning Dorsey on why he had lost followers on the social media platform. The BBC says that in a statement Twitter said the talks had focused on “protecting the health of the public conversation” in the 2020 presidential election campaign.

Mexico increases migrant deportations

Some 15,000 migrants have been returned to their home country from Mexico in the past 30 days, according to Reuters. A report by Voice of America details how Mexican security forces are raiding migrant caravans.

US trade delegation to visit China

Robert Lighthizer and Steven Mnuchin will lead a high-level US trade delegation to Beijing next week, CNBC reports. The trade representative and treasury secretary will continue the protracted trade negotiations on issues including intellectual property, forced technology transfer, non-tariff barriers, agriculture, services, purchases, and enforcement, according to a statement from press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Nasa detects Marsquake

Nasa says sensors on its InSight lander detected a faint rumble on Mars that could be the first seismic signal detected on a planet other than Earth. The BBC has a report with graphics, and Science magazine has more detail.
