The Human Rights Committee criticised the draft law on the concealment of the facePicture credit: Denis Bocquet

In an interview with radio RTL, Pregno explained his committee’s opinion on the recent draft law on the concealment of the face. He said it was clear that this law targeted women wearing a burqa or a niqab, and that estimates suggest between 5 to 10 women wore them in Luxembourg.

Recently, the Council of State also passed a critical opinion of the draft law.

The Human Rights Committee found the whole discussion a little fanciful. The president also suggested that it should be analysed whether women hiding their faces threaten a harmonious living together and threaten society in general. He criticised further that the law did not provide a reason, its usefulness or the impact that such a ban would have. The law was further infringing the right to privacy and religious freedom, and did not punish the men who might force women to wear these clothes, but only punished the women.
