Located in southern Andalusia, Jerez de la Frontera is one of Spain’s most southerly cities and one that takes its name from the fact that it separated the Moorish and Andalusian kingdoms, that is the Christian and Muslim worlds, until the 13th century. Nowadays, there are still plenty of monuments around the city that bear testimony to its rich historic past, including El Salvador cathedral and the Alcazar.

Jerez is also a hotbed of flamenco and hosts an annual festival dedicated to the musical genre, which dates back to the 18th century, from late February and early March every year. Aficionados will be spoilt for choice with the many concerts and shows to be enjoyed in various theatres, bars, clubs and public squares around the city, which attract some of the biggest names on the scene, with plenty of classes and workshops also on offer for amateurs who might fancy giving it a try. A series of prizes are also awarded at the end of each edition of the festival.

Jerez is also the place to come to enjoy the famous Sherry - a sun-drenched fortified wine and the only one of its kind you’ll find anywhere in the world. Head for one of the city’s many bodegas and give it a try! Once the fermentation process is completed, raisin spirit is added to the wine to stabilise it - a practice that dates back to the days when the wine needed to be prevented from turning bad during long journeys by boat. These days, Sherry can be enjoyed at various points during a meal, typically as an aperitif or with dessert, since it is available in many varieties ranging from dry to sweet.

The Costa de la Luz, which lies some 20km from the city, is also worth a visit whilst you’re in the area, with its many protected natural areas (cliffs and marshlands, lagoons and beaches of long, fine sandy dunes) and its cultural sites, wall-to-wall sunshine and unrivalled beauty.
