The number of workplace accidents in Luxembourg has stabilised over the past 26 years despite the workforce more than doubling Delano archive

In 1990 when there were 158,642 people working in Luxembourg, the “Association d’Assurance Accident” recorded 21,287 accidents, with just 20,000 recognised. Despite some fluctuations in the intervening years, the number rose to just 25,827 in 2016 with 20,075 recognised out of a total workforce of 394,275 people.

What is more unsettling is the number of deaths caused by workplace accidents, which appears to be stuck at around 22 from 2015 to 2016. Figures for 2017 were not publicly available at the time of publishing. Deaths from workplace accidents have seen fluctuations, dropping to its lowest number in 2012 when three people lost their lives, and rising to its highest in 1993 when 26 people died in workplace accidents.

In 2016, a fifth of accidents took place on industrial sites, 27% were in public places (public transport or roads), with a further 22% on building sites. Three out of ten accidents involved someone being struck by an object.
