Dear Job Doctor,

Should I send my application to a generic email address?

Company websites and job advertisements may not provide the name and contact details of a specific person within the organisation. The contact details may be an anonymous address, such as “info@company.lu”.

If at all possible, I recommend that you avoid sending your details to an anonymous address, as it is more difficult to hold someone accountable for a response or feedback. It’s also difficult to have full control over your own private details and protect your confidentiality, especially if you are currently employed.

I would recommend that you should call up the company, even reception, and ask for the most appropriate point of contact and/or name of someone who will be accountable for your details--even if it is the person who answers the phone then at least you will have a point of referral.

It is important to only apply for roles where you meet the criteria stipulated in the advertisement. If the required criteria are not clear, call and ask for more information before submitting your details.

Be selective with the roles you apply to, your CV is an important and confidential document that should only be submitted after thoughtful consideration. Sending your CV indiscriminately may lead to a loss of credibility. If your professional experience is match for the advertised and subsequent role you are applying for, be assured that your CV will get in front of the “right” person.
