Politics: minister of the economy Jeannot Krecké this morning confirmed that he will leave his post at the start of February.
The minister cited personal reasons for his decision to resign from the cabinet. The 61-year old had already informed ministerial and socialist party colleagues of his decision and had, according to some sources, wanted to wait until the new year to make public his resignation, But a leak to the media yesterday morning forced his hand, and he broke off a trade mission to Vietnam to return to Luxembourg and hold a press conference.
Krecké refused to be drawn on the issue of a successor in the post. The LSAP party executive will have to nominate a candidate and although the name of Etienne Schneider--currently director general for economic development, new technologies and energy at the ministry--has been mentioned by several sources, Krecké said the question was still open. Former transport and environment minister Lucien Lux is also apparently in the frame, while some media are even suggesting that Alex Bodry, who was in cabinet between 1989 and 1999, may return to government.
