Every year on the first Monday of the Schueberfouer funfair, generally the first Monday in September, the country’s largest clearance sale attracts thousands of bargain hunters to Luxemburg City.
This year’s Braderie is on Monday 31 August. It is the city of Luxembourg’s most important commercial event and has been a fixture on the retail calendar since 1929.
Covering more of the city than May’s Stroossemaart, the Braderie sees shops in the city centre and the Gare neighbourhood set up stands on the sidewalks, offering customers a chance to browse in the sunshine. But be warned, the bargain hunting starts early, with many shoppers already thronging the streets when the sales start at 8 a.m. Visitors to the event, which closes at 6 p.m., can also buy food and drink at stands around the city.
Also, the closure of several streets, especially the avenue de la Liberté, will affect traffic and public transport. Several bus routes that operate between the Gare and the upper city will be diverted via the Rocade the Bonnevoie behind the main railway station.
