Ten things to do

Family Tuesday 23 June

Celebrate the Day

While Monday evening’s festivities are all about partying into the wee hours, the programme for National Day itself is more about tradition and family.

Celebrate the Day

National Day celebrations in Luxembourg City are a mix of formal occasion, tradition and fun and entertainment for the family. The celebrations begin with an official, non-religious ceremony at the Philharmonie, attended by the Grand Duke and his family with invited guests from official authorities and all walks of life. This is followed at 11 a.m. with a canon salute fired across the city from Fetschenhof--a wake up call to anyone hung over from the eve of National Day parties.

The traditional military parade along avenue de la Liberté, where troops from the army as well as officers from the Police Grand-Ducale salute the Grand Duke, begins at 11.30 a.m.

Meanwhile, families can enjoy a “Spillfest” day at the Kinnekswiss in the municipal park. The family-friendly party takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features entertainers include the Guixot de 8 troupe from Barcelona as well as plenty of activities for kids. Entrance is free of charge for everyone.

A chance to glimpse the royal family and VIPs in all their finery comes in the afternoon when the Notre Dame cathedral hosts the Te Deum religious service. The royals traditionally walk from the Grand Ducal palace to the cathedral for the ceremony and at 4.30 p.m.

Up in the city centre, free concerts are held on the place d’Armes starting at 3 p.m. Artists performing on the band stand include the Ginta Fiesta Orchestra, the Amicale Garnisounsmusek Dikkrech and Saxitude.
