French American cellist Yo-Yo Ma founded the Silk Road Project to promote multicultural artistic exchange. The ensemble performs in Luxembourg this Thursday.
Founded in 1998 by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, a former child prodigy, the Silk Road Project encompasses a number of artistic, cultural and educational programmes. The best known is the Silk Road Ensemble, a collective of musicians, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers that travels the world performing for audiences.
As well as traditional classical music instruments, the Ensemble uses various instruments from the Silk Road region, including for this performance a pipa (a Chinese short-necked plucked lute), a gaita (a type of Spanish bagpipe), a sheng (A Chinese reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes) and a Kamanche (an Iranian bowed string instrument).
Expect some beautiful and unusual music as the ensemble plays compositions from around the world.
