The Wiltz festival continues with one of the most popular operas from the 20th century.
Conceived as an “American folk opera”, George and Ira Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess has gone on to become one of the best loved operas of the 20th century. The opera features a gaggle of hit songs, including the ubiquitous ‘Summertime’ as well as ‘I Loves You Porgy’ and ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’.
A love story and commentary on the lives of African Americans in the inter-war years, the opera was first performed in 1935. But it was only later that Porgy and Bess was recognised as part of the opera canon and the songs became established as standards in the jazz world.
The three-act opera is performed here by the New York Harlem Theatre over three nights in the beautiful setting of the Château de Wiltz courtyard.
