Each year on July 19 the Casino contemporary art forum hosts a concert in homage to Franz Liszt, who famously played his last piano recital in the same building in 1886.
A plaque on the wall of the Casino contemporary art forum marks the occasion on which Liszt played his last ever piano recital. The renowned Hungarian composer and pianist died just two weeks later in Bayreuth, Germany. Since 1996 the Casino has been hosting a concert in homage to Liszt, often featuring local musicians.
This year also features a local musician: percussionist Lauren Warnier is joined by Chinese musician Rachel Xi Zhang. The pair have been performing as the Joint Venture duo since 2007 and won the Bernard Haitink Prize during the 2009-2011 edition of the Vriendenkrans Competition in Amsterdam. The duo was awarded a 9-concert tour throughout the premier halls of the Netherlands.
Recent performances include tours in China and the Netherlands and the duo was also invited to play at the Luxembourg Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010.
Joint Venture has also premiered new compositions written for them by Japanese composer Oda Yu, Dutch composer Fred Momotenko and Luxembourg composer and fellow percussionist Pascal Schumacher.
This concert includes works by Igor Iofe, Noriko Koide, Gunther Schuller, Ton de Leeuw, Lyle Mays, Betsy Jolas, Vinko Globokar and Monsheng Wai as well as a world premier of a composition by Trevor Grahl especially commissioned by the Casino.
