See Dada’s Carmen

Unconventional and prodigious South African choreographer and dancer Dada Masilo employs 14 dancers for her take on “Carmen”.

See Dada’s Carmen

Dada Masilo’s incomparable style has turned her into a leading African star. Born in Soweto in 1985, she grew up in the township and initially trained in classical and contemporary dance at Braamfontein’s National School for the Arts and at the Dance Factory of Johannesburg.

Later, she went to live in Europe, where she pursued her training at P.A.R.T.S. (the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) founded by Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker in Brussels.

Still in her twenties, in 2012 she staged her own production of Swan Lake at the Biennale de Lyon. The show, which also came to Luxembourg, saw the fiancé of the swan princess fall in love with the black swan.

The Carmen show as been described as “sassy, sexy and confident” as Masilo strips Flamenco back to its African origins with the music of Rodion Shchedrin's Carmen Suit. Fourteen performers dance out the destiny of the Spanish feminist figure, evoking themes of sex, rape, manipulation and power.

Artsblog wrote “There may never have been a bolder, more erotic Carmen.
