Municipalities manage essential services, doing much more than just running the local citizens’ office.

1. Schools

Pre- and primary school infrastructure as well as “maison relais” daycare facilities are operated by communes, which decide--for example--how school buildings are designed. Enrollment, school transport and day-to-day operations are under local authority, while the government handles education policy and curricula.

2. Transport

Luxembourg transport is divided into national, regional and local networks, with communes in charge of developing cycling infrastructure, parking, car-free zones or pedestrian areas within their remit. That also includes making sure infrastructure is accessible, for example designing lowered pavements for persons with disabilities.

3. Sports and culture

While there is state funding for some of the sports facilities and cultural centres dotted across the country, town councils play a vital role in organising the social season, supporting sports clubs and making their municipalities come alive. Keep an eye out for local events, which are an excellent chance to meet your mayor and connect with your neighbours.
