There are many ways to spend the most romantic of commercial holidays with your beloved, like preparing a candlelit dinner, going to the cinema or organising a craft date. But, conscious of the tighter budgets Luxembourg households are on this year, Delano has found other ways to celebrate with the one you are, or want to be, heavily indebted to the bank with.

1. Do your taxes

“Hey, want to sit down and scratch our heads over a really long form and hope we’ve filled it out correctly to avoid financial repercussions?” might not be the best pick-up line at a bar, but could do wonders when you’ve already graduated to a deeper kind of love. So why not share the burden, picking at rapidly cooling takeaway while you figure out when to tick what box and what code to indicate in which scenario?

2. Go through your syndic reports from last year

Nothing screams ‘candlelight dinner for two’ more than parsing your homeowner association’s annual financial statement and annual general meeting report together. By dessert, you two will naturally be speculating on when the roof will need to be redone and when other budget-busting repairs will come due. Bon app, chéri!

3. Shop for life insurance

Couples can project their joint future, and find their inner actuaries, by pouring over potential life insurance policies tête-à-tête. Don’t forget to comparison-shop mortgage protection insurance () plans. Who says romance is dead?

4. Share your subscription passwords

We’re not suggesting you should go against the law, but, if you’re in a new relationship and want to express just how committed you are, you can always do so for free by sharing a subscription to one of the many media platforms that exist nowadays. That way you’ll always have an excuse to watch stuff together, what with the crackdown on shared account details.

5.  Go for a long romantic walk on the ‘beach’

Being in Luxembourg, where, in February, the closest thing to a sunny beach are slippery riversides and temperatures that struggle to go past 8ºC, we’d like to recommend a budget-conscious alternative to this ideal date: the supermarket. Stroll down the dairy aisle or pretend the expensive broccoli you just picked up is an exquisite bouquet of wildflowers--totally worth the €4 you’ll spend on it. Bonus activity: challenge each other to find the most affordable ingredients for your favourite dinner. Please keep your shoes on, though. This is not really the beach.

6. Shop for a green investment opportunity

The ‘worse’ in ‘for better and for worse’ shouldn’t include cooking the planet. So snuggle up, with each other and with some ESG brochures, and figure out your . Show commitment by signing up for an automatic . Sustainable s can be so, so sexy.

7.  Save on your electricity bills; turn off the lights…

…to contribute to Luxembourg’s energy saving target, of course.
