Conservative right-wing party ADR has called for the lifting of sanctions against Russia, stating that they would cause harm to Luxembourg’s economy. The EU has agreed a new package following the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the ADR presented its demands which include a continuation of the indexation scheme, making minimum wages and widow’s pensions tax-free as well as for economic sanctions against Russia to be dropped.

ADR wary of heading for a recession

ADR member of parliament stated that the package agreed by the EU would have a negative effect on most people. He spoke of a risk of entering a long recession and called on the government to lift the sanctions saying that they would cause damage to the Luxembourg economy and would not bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

Party president (ADR) said Europe’s vulnerability in terms of energy is “obvious”. For him, a realistic energy policy relying entirely on renewable sources would not work, but would require fossil and nuclear energy in addition.

EU member states agreed on 5 October to implement the bloc’s latest sanctions package against Russia’s government. This comes as a direct response to the recent annexation of four Ukrainian regions, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

A price cap on maritime trade of Russian oil will be introduced as well as a provision that would prohibit EU nationals from sitting on governing boards of Russia's state-owned companies. The list of individuals and entities accused of undermining Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty has also seen a couple of new additions.
