Work on extending the capital’s tram system to the airport is set to start on Monday.

Luxtram has outlined two preparatory construction projects for the future 3.9km tram line between Kirchberg and Findel airport.

Workers will begin removing trees on 3.2 hectares of land along the A1 motorway “starting on 25 October until early 2022,” Luxtram said in a press release on Friday. To offset the loss of green space, new oak and beech trees will be planted on 8.6 hectares in Junglinster, Lorentzweiler and Niederanven communes beginning in February 2022.

Construction will also start on a new bridge over the A1 motorway in January 2021.

Luxtram said service on the new line is expected to begin in 2024.
