The Italian restaurant Al Bacio on Rue Notre-Dame is changing its name and its cuisine to become Tomi’s Italian Burgers. Paperjam went to test it for you.

Tomi’s Italian Burgers is a newcomer to Luxembourg’s Rue Notre-Dame. The restaurant is located in the place of Al Bacio and, from now on, it is no longer fresh pasta dishes announced by voice that are offered, but tasty homemade burgers prepared with care.

The focus of the cuisine has changed, but the bosses, Tonio and Mino, remain the same as at Al Bacio. In fact, it was the contraction of their two first names that gave the restaurant its name. They chose to move Al Bacio a few metres down to 36 Rue Philippe II to take advantage of a beautiful corner space in which they have added a grocery offer. This is complemented by Al Bacio Bistrot, a little further up at number 1 on the same street.

For the Rue Notre-Dame location, they’re doing a 180° turn on the menu, which now focuses on burgers. There are also a few starters on offer, including arancini, vitello tonnato and salmon marinated in Martini.

As for the burgers, the recipes range from the classic beef burger to the veal burger (with red onion compote, sucrine, aleggio and fried onions)--our choice for lunch, which we wholeheartedly endorse--Italian burger (beef, burrata, pancetta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes) or chicken burger (served with a fried egg, bacon, cheddar and curry sauce). You can even dare to try a fish version with semi-cooked tuna (with soya, preserved lemon and guacamole). There’s a new suggestion every week. On our visit, it was a duck breast burger.

All the burgers are served with soft, light homemade buns and very fresh products, including top-quality meat. The fries are also large, deliciously spicy home-made potatoes.

For those who don’t fancy a burger, a butcher’s cut or a salmon steak are always available as an alternative.

Drinks include Italian wines, of course, as well as a selection of 12 beers and even signature house cocktails.

As for dessert, the choice is limited (panna cotta, cannolo or dessert of the day), but frankly, you have to have a hearty appetite to be able to order it.

As far as the setting is concerned, only a coat of paint has been applied to freshen up the room. The tablecloths have also disappeared. The rest has not changed.

Tomi’s, 24 Rue Notre-Dame, Luxembourg, tel: 27 99 48 81. Open Tuesday to Saturday, lunch and dinner.
