Four Luxembourg companies have made the Top Employers Institute’s list of the best employers in 2024: Lidl, HSBC, BNP Paribas and Amazon.

Every year, the Top Employers Institute notices and ranks human resources practices in companies. Among the criteria assessed are HR strategy, working environment, equity, inclusion and diversity.

As of last year, some 2,200 organisations in 122 countries had been certified (implicating over 9m employees).

“Exceptional times bring out the best in people and organisations,” said David Plink, CEO of the Top Employers Institute. “And we have witnessed this in our Top Employers Certification Programme this year: exceptional performance from the certified Top Employers 2024. These employers have always shown that they care for the development and wellbeing of their people. By doing so, they collectively enrich the world of work.”

Certification takes place in several stages. The company applying must first complete a survey, after which criteria related to HR management and working conditions are assessed. An external audit enables these scores to be verified. Companies must employ at least 250 people nationally or 2,500 worldwide to be eligible.

In Luxembourg, four companies have made the list.

Amazon

Amazon is no stranger to the ranking, having been named Top Employer Europe in 2023. This year, the tech giant--which is the country’s second largest employer (in terms of number of employees, with 4,250)--has additionally received Luxembourg-wide certification. “Being recognised as a Top Employer across Europe for the second consecutive year is an incredible honour, recognising our care for the development and wellbeing of our employees,” commented Jorrit Van der Meulen, Amazon's VP of European Stores.

BNP Paribas

BNP Paribas Luxembourg also received certification for its “excellent working conditions.” The group particularly stood out with high scores on the themes of “diversity and inclusion,” “employee commitment” and “career,” thanks to its interactive career portal, which is designed to “accelerate visibility,” “connect opportunities” and “facilitate development.”

“Employee engagement is a key factor in the development and transformation of a company. It’s a clear priority in our HR strategy. This commitment is illustrated by concrete measures, such as the continued use of teleworking and the introduction of a physical and mental wellbeing programme,” said Louis de Looz-Corswarem, HR director of BNP Paribas Luxembourg.

HSBC

“This achievement reflects our commitment to fostering a positive workplace where innovation, diversity and excellence thrive,” commented , CEO of HSBC Luxembourg. “I am immensely proud of our teams for this recognition.” In recent years, the bank has made a strong commitment to reducing gender inequality within its ranks.

Lidl

Finally, Lidl also received certification in Luxembourg for the third year running (and in Belgium for the sixth year running). The discount chain’s “high 5” model is notable: five pillars for managers and directors: leading by communicating; developing employees; being dynamic and results-oriented; trusting and acting fairly; and taking responsibility and leading by example. The brand has also developed its Young Talent Programme, aimed at young graduates.
