To mark one month since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Amnesty International is staging a gathering outside the Russian embassy to Luxembourg on Thursday.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International will be mobilising activists all around the world on Thursday 24 March, four weeks exactly after Russian military forces entered Ukraine. The Luxembourg section of Amnesty will stage a protest outside the Russian embassy in the late afternoon.

“Over the past month and the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia, thousands of lives have been destroyed, as have the homes, civilian infrastructure and livelihoods of the civilian population in Ukraine,” says Olivier Pirot, director of Amnesty International Luxembourg.

Amnesty International Luxembourg is calling on Russia to put an immediate end to its aggression and to protect the lives of civilians as well as civilian homes and infrastructure. The organisation is calling on all parties to strictly respect international and humanitarian law and is demanding an end to indiscriminate attacks and the use of prohibited weapons. Humanitarian organisations must be able to provide assistance to civilians affected by hostilities, the group said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Amnesty International will also hand over a petition calling for an end to Russian aggression and the protection of civilians in Ukraine to the embassy. Internationally, the petition has already collected more than 340,000 signatures.

“Russia is responsible for a major humanitarian crisis that sees millions of displaced people and families torn apart. In Russia also civil society and the media that oppose this invasion are severely repressed. We will therefore gather in front of the Russian embassy to say again and again that this act of aggression is a crime under international law and must stop immediately,” Pirot added.
